MARIETTA — A Marietta resident whose daughters call the “rock” of their family has been named one of three finalists in a national makeover contest for mothers.

Debbie Shetter, 56, was selected from among nearly 700 contestants as a finalist in the first Genesis Today Mommy Makeover Contest. The winner will be named Thursday and will receive a $5,000 grand prize that includes a day of pampering at a local spa, a shopping spree gift card, a one-year gym or yoga membership, and a night out with the person who nominated them.

Caitlin Shetter said that she saw the contest on the juice maker’s Facebook page and could not think of anyone more deserving than her mother.

“There’s no one like her,” Caitlin Shetter said. “She puts everyone before herself at all times and literally has given everything to my sister and I and … doesn’t give back to herself.”

“I wanted to give back to her what she’s been giving to us. She’s just like literally the rock of the family. I don’t know where we would be without her.”

Debbie Shetter, the busy mother of two grown daughters, said she is excited about her nomination.

“I am just totally blown away,” Debbie Shetter said. “It’s very honoring to be nominated by my daughter and so exciting and an honor to be chosen by Genesis.”

After Debbie Shetter’s mother’s health took a turn for the worse in June and her granddaughter, Isabella, was diagnosed with a brain cyst, she decided to spend her time traveling each month between Marietta and south Florida to help take care of her loved ones — the duties of a mother, as she would say.

On top of all that, she recently earned masters degree in education.

“I can’t imagine not being there for my mom,” Debbie Shetter said. “It just isn’t an option. She would do the same for me. It’s just kind of what we do. I just can’t imagine not stepping in to help.”

Debbi Shetter said her mother struggles with seeing and hearing loss, asthma, pneumonia, arthritis and type 2 diabetes.

“I try to take her out as often as I can, even if it’s just to go sit at Starbucks,” she said. “It’s just about getting her out.”

But she realized she has to take some time for herself as well.

“I was just doing everything for them … I’ve tried to take a step back,” she said. “I take walks on the beach, that’s my ‘oxygen.’ In taking care of an elderly parent, we forget to do that.”

But a few years ago, health concerns of her own prompted her to lose 50 pounds.

“I had gone to the doctor just for a checkup, and I had high cholesterol, so I started walking little by little, then worked weights in there and watched what I was eating,” Shetter said. “I managed to get it under control.”

But with her time spent caring for her family, she hasn’t had a chance to go shopping.

“Life has been so hectic and busy … I haven’t been able to just go and have the luxury of trying on new clothes,” she said. “Everything I have is from several years back. They’re good clothes, but it would be fun to get out there and get new things.”

The three finalists have already received Genesis Today products and a nutrition consultation with the Genesis Today’s CEO and founder, Dr. Lindsey Duncan, a nutritionist who has treated celebrities like fashion designer Marc Jacobs.

Debbie Shetter uses Genesis Today products and calls them “top notch.”

“I’ve just been blown away with them. They have been on top of everything,” she said.

She spoke to Dr. Duncan about her health concerns and said she was very impressed.

Voting for a finalist opened on Aug. 22 and will end at midnight Wednesday. To vote for Debbie Shetter, visit the Genesis Today Facebook page at www.facebook.com/genesistoday.

Yes I agree with you she absolutely does DESERVE to win this Mommy Makeover...IF you read the article correctly it states that she has to go back and forth between Atlanta and Florida to help her ailing Mom and her granddaughter who also has a brain cyst....So that would mean she isn't working and there isn't an awesome salary....And I doubt she's dropping cash at Starbucks it sounds more like she's trying to get her Mom out of the house so they sit at Starbucks and have a drink every once in awhile...How does that saying go? Until you walk a mile in someone else's shoes you shouldn't make judgements...Something like that....I personally hope she wins this. She sounds like a truly selfless person and someone who goes above and beyond to help everyone else. Don't be jealous just be happy and vote for her!

Let's see: Beautiful grown children-check. Masters degree in education and the awesome salary that comes with it-check. Takes care of her ailing elderly mother like we all should-check. Lost 50 pounds on her own and looks great!-check. Drops cash at Starbucks despite the poor economy-check.

If anyone deserves a makeover this lady does!
