The jury’s verdict Thursday morning means that Brian Richardson could be sentenced to death for the July 2007 stabbing and strangling of Steven Obara at the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta.
Prosecutors say Richardson told investigators he used a fire extinguisher pin to kill Obara because he was a convicted child molester.
Defense attorneys argued Richardson should be charged with lesser crimes, such as manslaughter, that wouldn’t subject him to the death penalty. The sentencing phase of the trial will begin Tuesday.
Richardson was serving a 65-year sentence for armed bank robberies when he was put in the same cell with Obara, who was serving 10 years for possessing child pornography and child molestation.
